Borno State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Professor Usman A. Tar, has commended media practitioners for their vital role in shaping public perception and promoting social change. He noted that journalists in the Northeast have continued to demonstrate professionalism, ethics, objectivity, and sensitivity despite operating in a complex security and social environment.
Professor Tar gave the commendation while declaring open a four-day media capacity-building workshop on โStrengthening the Capacity for Positive Gender Reporting on Gender Responsiveness and Inclusive Governanceโ held in Maiduguri.
He applauded the European Union (EU) and the German International Development Agency (GIZ) for their sustained support toward strengthening inclusive governance and gender-responsive reporting in the Northeast.
The training, organized under the Social Protection Partnership and Economic Resilience in Northeast Nigeria (SEPIN-SUSI) programme, is jointly funded by the EU and implemented by GIZ.
Describing the workshop as timely, the Commissioner emphasized that empowering journalists with gender-sensitive reporting skills would deepen public understanding of womenโs participation in governance and promote accountability in policy implementation.
Professor Tar further urged the media to continue promoting narratives that foster peace, inclusivity, and development across the region.
The four-day workshop brought together journalists, media executives, and representatives of civil society organizations from across Borno and neighboring states.
