The Borno State Government has graduated six hundred and fifteen teachers from its two-year Special Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) Teacher Training Programme, as part of efforts to phase out unqualified teachers in public schools.

The graduation ceremony held at the College of Education, Waka-Biu, marks the completion of the final batch of teachers enrolled in the programme under the education reforms of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum.

The teachers were drawn from all the twenty-seven local government areas of the state and were trained in classroom management, pedagogy, literacy and numeracy skills.

Out of six hundred and forty-seven teachers who commenced the programme, six hundred and fifteen successfully completed the training.

The programme, coordinated by the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, followed a statewide assessment which identified teachers in need of professional upgrading.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Engineer Lawan Abba Wakilbe, commended the commitment of the graduates and announced that all successful participants would be migrated to the approved minimum wage structure and placed on their appropriate grade levels.

Also speaking, the Provost of the College of Education, Waka-Biu, Doctor Gambo Saljaba, described the graduation as a major milestone in strengthening the quality of teaching in Borno State.

He noted that beyond academic achievements, the programme recorded three marriages, the birth of twins to one participant, and the unfortunate loss of three trainees.

Permanent Secretary of the Borno State Universal Basic Education Board, Doctor Hyelni Mshelia, urged the graduates to apply the skills acquired to improve learning outcomes in schools and uphold professionalism.

The event featured cultural displays and the presentation of certificates, and is part of the state government’s broader effort to professionalise teaching and ensure that only qualified teachers remain in classrooms across Borno State.
