Call for Restructuring as Mass Communication Lecturer Highlights Decline of BRTV

A lecturer from the Faculty of Mass Communication at the University of Maiduguri, Dr Musa Usman Konduga, has called for the restructuring of the Borno Radio Television (BRTV) to restore its declining performance and improve service delivery across Borno State. In a post shared on his Facebook page, Dr. Konduga described BRTV as a once-thriving broadcasting institution that, for over four decades, served as a training ground for broadcasters while meeting the news and entertainment needs of communities across the state. He, however, noted that the station has recently suffered setbacks due to challenges such as underfunding, neglect, loss of experienced personnel, recruitment of uncommitted staff, growing industry competition, and damage caused by flooding at the broadcast house.

He commended ongoing efforts by the Borno State Government under Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, alongside the Commissioner and the General Manager, to revive the organisation.

Dr. Konduga proposed splitting BRTV into two independent entities—Borno Television Corporation (BTC) and Borno Radio Corporation (BRC)—each with separate management and workforce. He suggested that the television arm remain at the current broadcast house near the Post Office, while the radio division be relocated to the administrative block near GT Bank.

According to him, the proposed restructuring would enhance operational efficiency, improve management, and align Borno with other states in the region that operate similar broadcast systems, noting that only Borno and Gombe currently maintain a unified structure.
