Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, marked the 2026 Democracy Day celebration by donating two Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles and other operational logistics to the Nigerian Army to strengthen ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the state.

The armoured vehicles were handed over to the Theatre Command of Operation Hadin Kai to improve troop protection against improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and ambushes. The governor also provided Hilux vehicles and motorcycles to support soldiers operating in difficult terrains across Borno.

As part of the Democracy Day activities, Zulum joined internally displaced persons (IDPs) at the Madinatu Camp in Maiduguri, where he distributed food items, non-food materials and cash assistance to 2,500 beneficiaries.

Addressing the displaced persons, the governor announced that the Madinatu Camp, currently the only formal IDP camp within Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, would be closed within one month as part of the state government's resettlement programme.

Zulum stated that the Borno State Government had successfully resettled more than two million displaced persons to their ancestral communities over the past seven years, stressing that camp life was not a permanent solution to displacement.

He reiterated his administration's commitment to restoring the dignity of displaced citizens by ensuring their safe return to their communities with access to security and means of livelihood. He noted that democracy should bring tangible improvements to the lives of the people.

The governor also approved N50,000 for each of the 2,500 beneficiaries, in addition to distributing 25kg bags of rice and sorghum and wrappers for women. The event was attended by senior government officials, APC leaders, lawmakers, commissioners and commissioner-designates.
