The Managing Director of the North East Development Commission (NEDC), Mohammed Goni Alkali, has inspected the ongoing construction of the Galtimari and Moromoro bridges in Maiduguri, describing the projects as critical to restoring access, reviving local commerce, and accelerating recovery efforts in the state.
The two bridges were destroyed during the 2024 Maiduguri flood and are now being rebuilt as part of the state’s wider reconstruction programme aimed at rebuilding infrastructure damaged by flooding and insecurity.
Speaking during the inspection visit, Alkali assured residents of Borno State that all ongoing bridge and road projects would be completed on schedule. He stressed that there would be no room for delays, noting that the bridges are crucial to reconnecting communities and restoring livelihoods.
He further disclosed that contractors handling the projects have been directed to strictly adhere to agreed timelines, with continuous technical supervision in place to ensure quality and durability.
“The Commission is committed to transparency and accountability, working closely with the Borno State Government to monitor progress and address challenges,” Alkali stated.
Reaffirming the Commission’s broader mandate, the NEDC boss emphasized that road and bridge construction remains central to its development plan for the North-East region.
During the inspection, the Project Coordinator, Engr. Kori Shattima, described the bridges as among the most significant infrastructure projects currently underway in the area.
She explained that the Galtimari Bridge is being reconstructed as a six-span, 120-metre structure designed to better withstand future flooding. Before its collapse, the bridge served as a vital alternative route for residents and traders, and its reconstruction has already eased movement around the market district.
Upon completion, the Galtimari and Moromoro bridges are expected to significantly ease transportation challenges and restore economic links disrupted by years of insecurity and the recent flood disaster.
